Understanding the Hierarchy of Domains, Sites, Departments, and Users

A quick explanation of the hierarchy of data in the netsapiens platform.

The Netsapiens platform is split up into 4 different parts, Domains, Sites, Departments, and Users.

Domains and Users are mandatory and required for any kind of functionality within the platform, whereas Sites and Departments are optional and mainly for organisational purposes.

The Domain

A domain is where everything about a customer will sit, anything you configure on the platform needs a domain for it to be configured on, and the domain is also used for SIP Registration.

Sites and Departments

These are optional organisational features of a domain that let you easily group features and users into their own separate groupings.

By grouping parts of the platform this way it allows for easy configuration of certain things you might want to do in bulk, see below for a list of what is possible:

  • Set the Caller ID of an entire Site or Department
  • Set Music on Hold for a an entire Site
  • Call pick up from a site or a department
  • Filter contact directory by site or department
  • Set Dial Permissions per site
  • Setup configuration file overrides per site
  • Filter CDR reports via site

The User

Users are singular entities within a domain, each user has it's own extension number as well as features such as voicemail and answering rules.

In most cases, each user will represent a single person who uses the phone platform, however this does not necessarily have to be the case. You could have a user called "Front Desk" that represents a single phone sat at a reception desk, or you could have a user called "Sales Voicemail" that represents a voicemail box used by an organisation's sales team.

Regardless of how you set it up, a user is required for any kind of interaction within the platform, without a user you cannot generate a SIP Account and register a device to make/receive phone calls.

Users themselves require a domain to be under, and can be assigned to Sites/Departments.
